Antihistamines are a class of pharmaceutical drugs designed to stop the action or block the production of histamine. A histamine antagonist, the drug stops the formation of histamine from histidine upon being catalyzed by histidine carboxylase. This type of allergy treatment is often available in liquid, capsule, tablet or other chewable forms which may be taken orally.

Antihistamine Benefits

Antihistamines are often used to treat allergies, including but not limited to seasonal allergies (hay fever), allergic rhinitis, food allergies (nuts, seafood), and indoor or outdoor allergies. These allergies are often the result of protein intolerance or histamine intolerance. Histamine promotes increased permeability in blood vessels, hence more fluids flow into tissues, causing runny nose and watery eyes. Hives, skin rashes and insect bites may also be treated using antihistamines.

Antihistamine Side effects

Anti histamine may induce drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. It is recommended that those taking antihistamines that cause drowsiness best take it prior to bedtime. Or, simply choose non drowsy antihistamine.
